How to do Cairns Festival with Kids

Kids, Chaos, and Culture: Surviving Cairns Festival with the Whole Family (and Still Having Fun)

Let’s be honest. Doing a festival with kids is a delicate dance between snacks, tantrums, and trying not to lose anyone in a crowd. But Cairns Festival? It’s built for families, chaos and all. Whether you’ve got a pram-pusher, a tween with “nothing to do,” or a whole pack of overstimulated snack gremlins, there’s something here for everyone (including you, brave adult).

1. Embrace the (Beautiful) Mayhem

Cairns Festival isn’t just kid-friendly - it’s kid-thrilling. Start with The Whale, a larger-than-life puppet experience down on the Esplanade Eastern Lawn. It’s interactive, it’s awe-inspiring, and it’ll blow their tiny minds. Add in The Bubble Emporium, where suds, silliness and squeals are the currency of choice, and you're onto a winner.

Need more hands-on action? Head down to the Turtle Making Workshop with Jimi Thaiday - arts and crafts with actual purpose (and no glitter in your carpet). At the Lagoon, catch Let’s Organise Your Leisure, a pool noodle-powered art performance that’s as fun as it is completely unexplainable.

2. Free Fun? You Bet

This is a festival where you don’t have to mortgage the house to entertain your children. The Grand Parade and Fireworks is a no-fail spectacle, and Canvas of Cairns transforms the Esplanade into a glowing rainforest-inspired dreamscape (bonus: it tires them out).

Be sure to head down for for a boogie at the Esplanade Main Stage, and on Grand Parade day, find yourself a pozzie to gaze upwards for the Aerobatic Aircraft Display, taking to the skies over the Cairns Esplanade.

Roving performers, street musicians, and DJs on tricycles (Tone Mason’s Tricycle Takeover) keep the energy high and the “when are we going home?” low.

3. Build Your Own Adventure

Want culture? Drop into the Fever Dreams exhibition at Tanks, or for some chill time in the evening, head down to the breathtaking Australian aerial photography and Pama Voices. The kids can shake out their sillies while you recoup with beautiful imagery and videos projected onto the Mulgrave Gallery wall.

On Tuesday, get tangled in creativity at The Yarntree, where kids can knot, knit and weave creations to create a magical and colourful tree. Tag team with Little Taccas Treasure Hunt, a special Cairns Fest nature-based craft activity and discovery walk through the Botanic Gardens (free – bookings required) and you've got yourself a day!

On the final Friday, head out to Ravizza Park in Edmonton for a free screening of Runt, a film about an adopted stray dog with remarkable abilities. Pack a picnic blanket and some snacks, and settle in for the perfect family-friendly evening.

4. End on a High

Wrap it all up at Carnival on Collins – market stalls, street performers, and more free fun than a jumping castle at a birthday party. It’s your final hurrah and your Sunday saviour.

The kids will get sticky. Someone will lose a shoe. And you'll probably forget the sunscreen. But you’ll also get magic, music, and memories. And honestly? That’s the kind of chaos worth leaning into.

Keep exploring!

Cairns Festival has something for everyone.
